Jaipur, Rajasthan: The festival of Nag Panchami is considered very sacred and important in Hinduism. This festival is celebrated on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month, when devotees especially worship the snake god. On this auspicious occasion, an unprecedented crowd of devotees was seen at the famous Garuda temple of Jaipur on Tuesday.
Long queues of devotees were seen in the temple premises since morning. Women, men, children and the elderly – all were seen participating enthusiastically in this religious event. This scene had become a symbol of an uninterrupted flow of devotion.
Historical and religious significance of Garuda temple
Garuda temple is related to Garuda ji, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, but on the day of Nag Panchami, special worship is done here for the snake gods. According to the Puranas, there has been a relationship of enmity between Garuda and snakes, but in religious beliefs, this day represents a balanced worship of both the powers.
This temple located in Jaipur is known for special worship on Nag Panchami not only in Rajasthan but in the whole of North India. According to the priests of the temple, special Nag Puja, milk offering, Kusha Yagna and Kalsarp Dosh Nivaran Puja are organized here on this day, in which thousands of devotees participate.
The flow of devotees continued from morning to evening
On Tuesday, the movement of devotees started in the temple premises early in the morning. Many devotees reached the temple premises at night so that they could participate in the morning aarti.
The devotees brought milk, turmeric, kusha, sandalwood, flowers and lamps with them. By offering all these things to the idol of Nag Devta, they prayed for the happiness and prosperity of the family, freedom from diseases and relief from Kalsarp Dosh.
Worship method and special rituals
The following worship rituals were specially organized at the Garuda temple on the day of Nag Panchami:
Nag Yagna and Kusha Puja: Devotees worshipped the snakes with sacred Kusha with Vedic mantras.
Milk and turmeric offering: Devotees anointed the idol of the snake deity with milk and turmeric.
Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Havan: Special havan was performed for those who have Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscope.
Special Shringar and Deepotsav: The temple was decorated with colorful flowers, lamps and torans.
Extensive security arrangements
In view of the large crowd, the local administration had made tight security arrangements. Police force personnel, women constables and volunteers were deployed so that there is no chaos.
Separate gates were set for entry and exit to the temple. Special facilities were also provided for the elderly and women. Water, first aid and mobile toilets were also arranged by the administration.
Faith and experience of devotees
A devotee, Sunita Devi, who came from Ajmer with her family, said,
"Every year we come to Garuda temple on Nag Panchami. This time the crowd was many times more than before, but the arrangements and devotional atmosphere here were all divine."
Gangaram Sharma, who is 60 years old, said,
"I have been worshipping in this temple on Nag Panchami for the last 25 years. This time it seemed as if the whole city had merged into the temple."
Fast, story and folk beliefs
Mythological stories and folk beliefs related to Nag Panchami are also the reason for deep faith among the people. It is said that worshipping snakes on this day protects from fear, death and poison.
Many people observe fast on this day, in which only milk, fruits and water mixed with turmeric are consumed. Women listen to Nag Panchami Vrat Katha and worship by drawing snake pictures on the doors of the house.

This was the first occasion after the Covid-19 pandemic when such a large number of devotees gathered at the temple on Nag Panchami. In the last few years, the event was limited due to Corona restrictions. But this time the devotees participated openly without any fear.
