50-kg freestyle wrestler Vinesh Phogat was scheduled to compete in the final.

The well-known Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered a serious blow when she was disqualified from the Olympics in Paris for being 100 grammes overweight. In addition to rocking the sports world, this episode has sparked a heated political dispute between the Congress-led opposition and the Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly in light of the ongoing accusations of sexual assault against former wrestling body president Brij Bhushan Singh.

Senior government figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also backed Phogat, praising her for her tenacity and spirit of a champion. Modi expressed his grief and encouragement for Phogat to overcome this obstacle on social media. He underlined that she was the type to face challenges head-on and promised her of the country's backing.

Similar remarks were made by Ministers of Home Affairs Amit Shah and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who praised Phogat's fortitude and professional accomplishments. She was hailed by Rijiju as an icon of pride and optimism for India. When Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the Lok Sabha amid opposition protests, describing the government's backing and financial help granted to Phogat, the political fallout from Phogat's disqualification was further highlighted.

However, Congress MP Randeep Surjewala took to social media to claim that Phogat's disqualification was the result of a conspiracy and referred to the event as a "black day" in Indian sports history. He asserted that the "hate conspiracy" had stunned 40 crore Indians and highlighted the nation's backing for Phogat. Surjewala's tweet brought attention to the #MeToo demonstration against Brij Bhushan Singh as well as the BJP's and Singh's alleged mistreatment of Phogat.

Surjewala's allegations brought to mind the episode from the previous year in which Phogat was hauled from a protest site in Delhi; fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia also brought up the event, calling Phogat a "lioness" who was persecuted in her own nation.

The opposition and the ruling party are deeply divided, as evidenced by the political impact following Phogat's disqualification, with both sides uniting around the wrestler's difficult situation.
