Robert Downey Jr is set to make a surprising return to the Marvel superhero world after a five-year hiatus. However, this time he will not be reprising his iconic role as Iron Man, but instead will take on the role of Dr. Victor Von Doom, a prominent villain from the comic books that inspired the popular film series.

Downey Jr will make his comeback in "Avengers: Doomsday," which is scheduled for release in May 2026. He will also appear in a subsequent instalment titled "Secret Wars," due to hit theatres a year later. The exciting news was unveiled at the Comic-Con event in San Diego, where Downey Jr made a dramatic appearance on stage, concealed behind Doctor Doom's iconic mask and green cloak, before revealing his identity to an ecstatic audience.

Speaking to reporters, Downey Jr expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, "I like playing complicated characters." The 59-year-old actor was a pivotal figure in launching the Marvel movie universe, having starred in its first film, "Iron Man," in 2008. His last appearance in a Marvel film was in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Earlier this year, Downey Jr won an Oscar for his role in "Oppenheimer."

Marvel has several exciting releases lined up before the return of the Avengers to the big screen. In 2025, "Captain America: Brave New World" will see Harrison Ford replace the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. Florence Pugh will take on a leading role in "Thunderbolts," while Pedro Pascal will make his Marvel debut in "The Fantastic 4: First Steps."

The Marvel movie series, produced by Disney, has generated a staggering $30 billion (£23.3 billion) in box office takings, making it the first franchise to reach such heights. However, profits have slowed in recent years. Despite this, the recent release of "Deadpool & Wolverine," starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has shown signs of a potential revival, making $96 million on its opening day.

In other news, Marvel dropped actor Jonathan Majors, who played the villain Kang the Conqueror, following his conviction for assaulting his girlfriend.
