Following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's decision to keep Rae Bareli in office, the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency is getting ready for a by-election.

During his recent visit to Wayanad, Mr. Gandhi voiced his agony about which constituency he should leave—Wayanad or Rae Bareli—but in the end, he made the decision to leave Wayanad.

In the most recent Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Gandhi had won Wayanad and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Senior Congress leaders met on June 17 at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in Delhi, when they resolved to keep Rai Beariely and abandon the Wayanad seat.

It also resolved to put forth his Wayanad-based sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Mr. Gandhi secured an overwhelming victory for the second time, defeating his closest opponent Annie Raja of the Communist Party of India by a margin of 3,64,422 votes.
Annie Raja garnered 2,83,023 votes, compared to 6,47,445 for Mr. Gandhi. With 1,41,045 votes, BJP candidate K. Surendran finished in third place. 2019 Lok Sabha had been won by Mr. Gandhi.

elections from Wayanad with 4,31,770 votes, a record majority.

All eyes are now on Ms. Priyanka Gandhi to see whether she can replicate the incredible majority that Mr. Gandhi scripted in Wayanad and to find out who the LDF and NDA candidates are running against her.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Gandhi received 64.8% of the vote, with P.P. Suneer of the CPI receiving 25.2% of the vote, to finish second.

For the second time, Mr. Gandhi was elected by the people as both the national head of a major party and the MP.

The CPI's national leader, Ms. Annie Raja, ran a vigorous campaign and performed admirably. Her efforts, though, were unsuccessful. The third main candidate, BJP State President K. Surendran, saw little success with his campaign, despite a significant gain in the party's vote share. In Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Gandhi defeated his mother Sonia Gandhi's victory margin in 2019 with a margin of 3,90,030 votes in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.

Since its inception in 2009, the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat has backed the Congress party. Previously, if Mr. Gandhi were to step down, IUML State President Panakkad Sadiqali Shihab Thangal and IUML National General Secretary P.K. Kunhalikkutty had pleaded with Congress leaders to take Ms. Gandhi into consideration for the Wayanad seat. They argued that the UDF in the State will be strengthened by such a move.
