CBI Interrogation and Court Proceedings

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail on June 25, recording his statements related to the Delhi liquor policy case. The CBI has received approval to present Kejriwal before the trial court on June 26, according to reports.

Supreme Court Hearing

The Supreme Court is set to hear Kejriwal’s plea today, June 26. This plea challenges the Delhi High Court’s decision to stay the earlier bail granted to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief by the trial court. The case is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and even if Kejriwal is granted bail by the Supreme Court, it does not necessarily mean he will be released from Tihar Jail immediately.

CBI Seeks Kejriwal's Custody

According to a report by India Today, the CBI may arrest Kejriwal and seek his custody. The agency has moved an application before a special court seeking a production warrant for Kejriwal, which was subsequently issued by the court. The CBI plans to produce Kejriwal before a trial court before the Supreme Court hearing begins.

Since Kejriwal is already in judicial custody under ED charges, any formal arrest by another agency, such as the CBI, must be done before a court. If the CBI secures custody and arrests Kejriwal, he will not be able to leave Tihar Jail today, even if the Supreme Court grants him bail.

Legal Background

A Delhi court granted bail to Kejriwal on June 20, ordering his release on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh. However, the ED challenged this bail order in the Delhi High Court, which subsequently paused Kejriwal's bail and reserved its decision for June 25. Kejriwal then approached the Supreme Court against the High Court’s pause on his release.

The Supreme Court advised Kejriwal to wait for the High Court's decision, which was announced on June 25. The High Court ruled that the trial court did not specify the conditions for Kejriwal's release under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), under which he was charged.

AAP's Reaction

The Aam Aadmi Party has reacted strongly to the developments, accusing the CBI of conspiring to register a false case against Kejriwal. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged in a video message that the BJP-led Centre is behind the conspiracy to ensure Kejriwal's continued detention.

“Just when there was a chance that CM Arvind Kejriwal was likely to get bail from the Supreme Court, the BJP-led Centre has hatched a conspiracy with the CBI to file a false case and get him placed under arrest. The entire country is witnessing this crime, this atrocity by the Centre,” Singh stated.
