In summary, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Kolkata High Court has announced his resignation, effective Tuesday.
He claims that after leaving the position, he will choose which party to join.
There are rumours that he would run for office in the Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket.
Judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court, whose decisions on a range of education-related matters in West Bengal sparked political discussions, has declared that he will step down from his position on Tuesday. He has stated that he will decide which political party to join.

His comments coincided with rumours that he would be put forward by the BJP as their nominee from the Tamluk parliamentary seat in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari previously held this seat, which is currently held by his brother Dibyendu Adhikari.
The "call of my conscience" was for Justice Gangopadhyay to serve humanity, he said in an interview with news agency ANI.
"I am leaving my position as a judge at the High Court of Calcutta... My conscience is calling me to do this. I should now move to the wider group of people and location. When someone files a case, a judge in the court deals with the issues that are brought before him. But there are a lot of extremely defenceless people in our nation and in our state of West Bengal," he remarked.

Entering politics, according to Justice Gangopadhyay, "can give people who want to take steps in respect of those helpless people a chance to act for them".

He added that throughout the previous two years, he had been handling matters pertaining to education, and "a huge corruption was discovered and unearthed".

"Many prominent figures in this government's education sector are currently either awaiting trial or incarcerated. After that, I'm currently focusing on labor-related issues. Employers have also engaged in significant provident fund gratuity schemes. In such regards, I have also issued some directives. However, he added, "I have failed in handling labor-related issues and labour legislation because I felt that my work in this capacity was done."

NOTICE OF JUSTICE GANGOPADHYAY'S RESIGNATION
Justice Gangopadhyay announced on Sunday that he will be sending a letter of resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of India and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

"These days I will not do any justice work, I will just remove all the cases listed with me," he declared.

He declared that he will submit his resignation to the high court buildings at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, in front of the statue of the renowned liberation warrior Masterda Surya Sen, and answer all questions from journalists.

Justice Gangopadhyay ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into claims of irregularities in hiring non-teaching personnel and teachers for West Bengali government schools in 2022.

The Supreme Court was incensed with Justice Gangopadhyay last year after he spoke with a television channel regarding the ongoing case involving the teachers' recruitment scam. The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court was then instructed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to transfer the matter to a different judge.

On May 2, 2018, Justice Gangopadhyay, who was an attorney at the High Court, became an extra judge of the Calcutta High Court. On July 30, 2020, he was promoted to permanent judge status, as per information on the High Court's website.

OPPOSITION REACTIONS
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut commented on Justice Gangopadhyay's decision to resign from the Calcutta High Court, saying, "If sitting judges of the High Court and Supreme Court resign and join a particular political party, it means they were not delivering justice, but working for the party."

Similar feelings were expressed by his party colleague Priyanka Chaturvedi, who urged Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to take notice.
