Padmaja Venugopal, a former Kerala Chief Minister and daughter of the late Congress senior K Karunakaran, became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday in Delhi. The 2024 Lok Sabha Elections were the reason behind the erstwhile Congress leader's decision to join the BJP.

"Today, Smt. Padmaja Venugopal, the sister of Congress MP K Muraleedharan and the daughter of Kerala's most respected Congress leader and former chief minister, Shri K. Karunakaran, joined Kerala BJP at an event organised at the BJP Headquarters in New Delhi," wrote Kerala BJP chief K Surendran on X.

Delhi with Kerala BJP Prabhari Shri Prakash Javdekar ji in attendance. Greetings from the world's largest political party, Smt. Padmaja.Congress MP and brother of Venugopal, K Muraleedharan, claimed earlier in the day that her choice was a betrayal and would not help the BJP in the slightest. He stated that Karunakaran had never made concessions to communalism and that, from the perspective of those with a secular mindset, it was a sad development that a member of his family had joined the BJP.

"This is a regrettable choice. At a time when the Kerala Congress is working tirelessly to win all 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state, Padmaja has made this decision. She has always been valued highly by the Congress party. The BJP is going to obtain no benefit by bringing Padmaja into the party," ANI cited Muraleedharan as saying.

Muraleedharan went on to say that Padmaja had lost the three times she had received the party ticket to run in elections in Kerala. "There are many people who have attempted to do that to me, therefore the accusations that other party members were responsible for her defeat were not acceptable. He was reported by PTI as stating, "I have not complained about it because the people decide who should win or not."

Padmaja was a member of the party's Parliamentary Affairs Committee and was highly esteemed inside the political group, according to Congress MP Jebi Mather of the Rajya Sabha. Mather further stated that party exits had little bearing on election results or victories. "People's votes are influenced by the issues they face and how those issues affect them," the speaker stated.

The recent departure of individuals from the historic party, such as Anil Antony, the son of Congress stalwart and former Union Minister AK Antony, and their admission into the BJP, according to CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan, would not aid the saffron party in winning even a single seat in Kerala.

Kerala has twenty representatives in the Lok Sabha. This year, there will be elections for 543 Lok Sabha seats.
