In a recent announcement, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) revealed its four candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. Notably, journalist Sagarika Ghose, known for her biographies of former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has been chosen as one of the candidates. According to senior TMC functionaries, Ghose was handpicked by the party's top leadership.

Other Nominees Include Sushmita Dev, Mamata Bala Thakur, and Nadimul Haque

Joining Ghose are three other candidates: Sushmita Dev, Mamata Bala Thakur, and Nadimul Haque. Sushmita Dev, former president of the Congress' women's wing and a former Lok Sabha member who switched to the TMC in August 2021, brings her political experience to the table. Mamata Bala Thakur, a prominent leader from the Dalit Matua community and a former Lok Sabha member, adds diversity to the lineup. Nadimul Haque, currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member, completes the quartet of TMC nominees.

Political Landscape and Strategies

With the term of five Rajya Sabha members from West Bengal ending in April, including prominent figures like Nadimul Haque and Dr. Santanu Sen, the TMC faces a critical juncture in maintaining its stronghold in the region. The BJP, aiming to capitalize on the situation, has nominated Samik Bhattacharya, its Bengal chief spokesperson, for the fifth Rajya Sabha seat from the state.

Challenges and Considerations

Given the BJP's growing presence in Bengal, securing the fifth seat becomes imperative for the TMC. The Congress, having failed to win any assembly seat in 2021, faces a significant setback, with the BJP eyeing the vacant seat. With the BJP holding 75 seats in the 294-strong Bengal legislative assembly, the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls are poised to be a battleground of political strategies and manoeuvres.

As the political landscape in West Bengal undergoes shifts and realignments, the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls on February 27 are set to shape the future trajectory of the region's political dynamics. With the TMC unveiling its nominees, including notable figures like Sagarika Ghose and Sushmita Dev, and the BJP strategizing its move, the stage is set for a contest that could have far-reaching implications.
