Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a renowned philanthropist, made a notable visit to the Maa Mangla Basti in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. His arrival in the Odisha capital was marked on Tuesday night, with scheduled programs lined up for Wednesday, focusing on the utilization of artificial intelligence in agriculture.

During his visit, Gates is set to meet with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and participate in various events related to the 'Jaga Mission,' 'Mukta' scheme, and 'Mission Shakti.' These initiatives aim at the development of slums, creation of localized employment opportunities for the urban poor, and empowerment of women, respectively.

The collaboration between the Odisha government’s Department of Agriculture and Farmer Empowerment, the Fisheries and Animal Resource Department, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation since 2017 has been pivotal in driving innovation in data-driven decision-making, officials disclosed.

In a blog post on February 25, Gates expressed his anticipation for visiting a low-income community in Odisha, where a government program is assisting women in acquiring the skills necessary to secure government construction contracts. The program, active since 2018, has facilitated 22,000 groups of women in completing over 52,000 projects, including the construction of roads, drains, and toilets.

Highlighting India’s innovative spirit, Gates mentioned his excitement to witness India’s digital public infrastructure in action. He plans to visit an agricultural monitoring center in Odisha, where DPI is utilized to provide real-time guidance to farmers. The center, leveraging Aadhaar, maintains a registry of 7.5 million farmers and their crops, enabling officials to provide tailored farming advice and information through an AI-powered chatbot, available in local languages.

Recognizing India's rich history of innovation, Gates emphasized its significant contributions to the world, both historically and in recent times. He praised India's role in introducing the decimal system for numbers and highlighted the country's advancements in life-saving technologies that are benefitting millions globally.

Gates is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to discuss ways in which the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation can further support India's innovative ideas and inventions, ensuring their accessibility to all, regardless of geographical location.
