In a surprising turn of events, Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel is not only stepping into the shoes of a director but also the lead role in the upcoming action-packed revenge tale, "Monkey Man." The film, set to be theatrically released by Universal Pictures on April 5, has already garnered attention with its bloody and intense trailer.

Inspired by Hindu Mythology

Dev Patel stars as Kid, an anonymous young man struggling to make ends meet in an underground fight club. Night after night, disguised in a gorilla mask, he endures brutal beatings by more popular fighters in exchange for cash. The film draws inspiration from the legend of Hanuman, a significant deity in Hinduism.

The Plot Unveiled

The logline reveals the gripping narrative, stating, "After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him."

A Glimpse into the Action

The recently released trailer exhibits brutal action sequences reminiscent of the "John Wick" series. Patel's character embarks on a quest for bloody revenge, employing a range of weapons to shoot, stab, and bludgeon his way through gunmen. One particularly intense moment shows him brutally stabbing a man through the neck while gripping a knife between his teeth.

Patel not only stars in but also directs "Monkey Man" based on his original story and screenplay, co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Originally set at Netflix, the film is now making its way to theatres through Monkeypaw Productions' deal with Universal.

Joining Patel in the cast are notable names such as Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher, and Makarand Deshpande.
